Blogs Of Note V

If you like vulgar language, porn, and "hardcore" lifting, then the Chaos & Pain Blog will be a place for you. I hesitate to recommend it here, but sprinkled among the offensive photos and script are genuine nuggets of knowledge. Probably the best way to describe it would be to say it is like an X-rated version of T-Mag. In this post, The Rule Of Five (Part II), the author takes 5x5 sycophants to task. Be forewarned, "Chaos & Pain" is not exactly high-brow reading and viewing material - expect to be shocked and offended. Do not read it in front of minors, your wife, or at work.

I believe this blog has undergone a number of name changes over the years, but The Tight Tan Slacks of Dezso Ban reprints articles from popular writers and athletes about strongman, powerlifting, olympic lifting, and bodybuilding. Many of them are pieces that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else unless you owned the original publications. In this post, The ABCs of Weightlifting (Part 13), Tommy Kono writes about the importance of working your weaknesses.

Dan John recently released a new book with the help of Dave and Laree Draper entitled Mass Made Simple - it's a great book and I'll review it soon. In this blog post, Dan John talks about his book briefly and then outlines his work with a fighter - it should be required reading for doofus trainers who believe that the best way to work with their athletes is smoke them.

  1. I recall my first visit to Chaos & Pain made me wonder if it was good or not. After reading a few posts, Jamie's (the author) knowledge really does shine out. I enjoy a lot of the world-influenced posts, such as this:

The Dezso Ban blog looks great. Thanks Boris!

  2. I have been following The Tight Tan Slacks blog for about a year now. Soem of the articles are very dated, but it is a fascinating glimpse into the way lifting has evolved. The best aspect of the blog is the re-introducing of old time strongman and lifters that have been forgotten over the years.

Will check out the other at the house, far away from work.

  3. Sure - many of the articles are very old. Not sure I'd use "dated" for most of them, but like most articles there's stuff to use and stuff to consider. Certainly is a lot of wisdom in them.

  4. This blog, SquatRX is one of the better or best one recommended at the CharmCityKettlebells blog by Sandy. There are things I don't tell to other people, the weight lifting forums and all that can have "risque" things on them, I don't really like anymore and I'm not positive if they should be recommended but hey, to each their own.

  5. Anonymous,
Thank you. I understand and respect your opinion on that - they do get tiring for me too, even when there might be great information presented. I tried to be as clear as possible so people would not be shocked if they decided to go there.

  6. Talk about seeing "risque" things, what do you think of the turkish get up, Boris? I know you enjoy your kettlebells and was wondering if you performed this move. My chiro told me to stay away because the chance of injury is too great. Thoughts?

  7. Hi Jon,
Honestly, I don't do them as often as I should, but I think TGUs are great.

I don't think that the risk is anything extraordinary if you don't pile on the weight, if you don't have "issues" that you ignore, and if you are always refining technique. JMO however.
