Women & Pull-Ups

This was linked at a forum I frequent (thank you gentlemen who shall remain unnamed).

As I watched this, my ego protected itself by saying "Well, she's shaving some range of motion off of those!" ...until she banged out each of the last half dozen or so from a dead hang.

The other night, I did 17 reps. My best ever was 29 reps (20 years and 40 pounds ago mind you), all from a dead hang. 2010's goal will be to get 30 "moderately clean" reps.

How many can YOU do?

  1. Best ever was 11 fairly clean reps (I'd say a little leg lifting on the last 2-3 reps). Atm 7 leaves me pretty trashed and they're ugly chinups too...

  2. 14 reps at best. chin ups are my favorite exercise and everyweek my routine will have weighted chins. unfortunately still trying to break the 20 rep barrier

  3. Best ever was 12 dead hang. I think pull ups, supine rows, push ups, and squats are about the best all round basic exercises. Can do them anywhere - don't need a lot of equipment - hundreds of variations.

  4. I love this video! Especially the looks on the faces of the folks in the background sitting around doin' a whole lotta nothing....

  7. Yeah, but she only banged out 3x my personal best. Not so impressive. ;)

Kidding aside, that's good stuff - she started strong and ended strong.

  8. The most I've gotten was 13 last year at the age of 42. Previously my best had been 12 when I was 25 and doing lots of pullups.

I can't use age as an excuse as I understand this lady is also 44 years old. Very impressive work on her part.

  9. Thanks for the comments and links everyone - I will definitely check those out tonight.

FORTY-FOUR? I thought she was in her 20s!! Okay, no excuses at all now - I will hit 30 this year.

  11. My best was 28 dead hangs while I was in the Marines, but I also weighed 140 pounds. :)
    Makes it easier.

  12. Will do Dasic.

    Jordan,
How many can you do now? Being lighter is an advantage, no doubt. Being heavy is no excuse however - if I have to lose weight, I will.

  13. I'm not sure about BW as I haven't tested it in a while. I can hit one rep with a 28 kg. And 10 reps with 10 kg. For TSC training. I weigh about 170 right now.

  14. What is she a rock-climber?

Yeah and my ego is just bashed...Thanks Boris.

  15. That's pretty good Jordan - for TSC, you need to touch the throat, right?

    Darryl,
    She's tough - no doubt. I 'heard' she's a fitness competitor, but I don't know.

  16. 25 dead hang at the marine booth at the mn state fair summer 2009. i am 42yo. i want 30 in 2010. i still can not squat more than 300 though - annoying. for me doing weighted pull-ups (35-50lbs - chain belt or backpack) increases my ability to do reps.
